The
oldest portion of Monk Fryston Hall dates back over 800 years
just subsequent to the Norman Conquest. The Hall contains a wealth
of beautiful vaulting and old stone work as well as much rare
and valuable oak panelling.
This stately and very picturesque mansion standing in an extensive
and richly wooded park was once a monastery. The Rev. B. and Mrs
Hemsworth who owned the Hall from mid 18th century were the good
fairies of the district. They established a zoo, reputedly one
of the best private collection of animals, an aviary and boating
on the lake. Little remains except the Lucerne Bridge folly which
is decorated with carvings and excerpts from "The Rime of The
Ancient Mariner." In 1954 the late Duke of Rutland purchased the
Hall, his son Lord Edward Manners is the current owner.
